ONCE YOU FIND YOUR REASON

Living Fit Just Makes Sense

I joined the Fitness Center at Vetta Sports Concord in March 2010, as a belated 36th birthday present to myself. During the past two decades, I had slipped into a sedentary lifestyle, and it showed. In the past, I had joined other gyms, but I wouldn't regularly utilize my membership, and I could never seem to stick with any kind of plan. I didn’t even really have any concrete fitness goals, other than I knew I had to start moving.  I didn’t really know if Vetta would be any better, but soon I realized how different my experience at Vetta was from all the other gyms. The little things matter. I love that I don’t have to bring a lock or workout towel, and I never have to wait for a machine.  I love the free coffee and the free red apples make me giddy.  I am always greeted with a smile by whoever is working the desk, and I never feel scrutinized or judged by any other fitness members.

In the very beginning I was just walking on the treadmill at least 30 minutes a day all while doing my various positive affirmations.  Upon joining, I was given a free personal training session to get started safely using the Cybex selectorized equipment, so I made an appointment with one of the Vetta Sports personal trainers.  They set me up on the equipment and gave me instruction on how to maximize my efforts.  I then began adding the machine workout every other day, making sure to take a day of rest between workouts, all while still using the treadmill 5-6 times a week.

The personal trainer had been sure to mention at that 1st session that the group fitness classes were free to me as a member, and encouraged me to try the Body Pump class.  I wasn’t sure I would like it, since the last time I had worked out in a group setting was in High School, and I hadn’t relished my experience.  By late May one Saturday morning I finally listened to her repeated suggestion that I try the class.  I was exhausted by the end of that hour, but I was a believer.   After about 5 weeks of doing 2-3 Body Pump classes per week in lieu of the machines, and losing 25 glorious pounds, I had hit my “plateau” and I felt like I needed more fitness challenge, so I signed up for some personal training sessions.  Their coaching and nutrition counseling guided me through that plateau.

My current routine is to try to get to Body Pump classes at least once a week, preferably 2-3, alternating those days with walking on the treadmill or ellipticals with variable inclines.  My favorite preset elliptical setting is “cross-country.”  Recently I discovered the Friday’s Step Class was a nice way to shake up the treadmill doldrums.  I look forward to Saturday morning’s Body Flow Class, knowing that it helps keep me centered, increasing my flexibility and balance.  In mid-October I began taking advantage of the Strength & Conditioning classes in the early mornings.  Although it is a workout that I sometimes feel the next day, I love the way it keeps me feeling like I have really accomplished something good, and that feeling stays with me throughout my day.

I never enjoyed working out until I joined Vetta, just ask anyone who has known me for the last 20 years.  My experience with the friendly Vetta Staff and the camaraderie of all the members is such a rare find in today’s impersonal world.  I now can’t imagine life without my “me time.”  Since joining 9 months ago, I have lost over 40 pounds and 3 sizes.  The greatest part of all is I cannot imagine life without fitness.  Thank you Vetta!

One year ago when I turned sixty-five, I began to evaluate my physical conditioning. For over thirty years I’d played tennis, joining Vetta’s tennis club when South Hampshire’s venue was sold.  However, I’d had back surgery and a knee replacement to deal with, along with chronic osteoarthritis.  To complicate my physical issues, I had gained a lot of weight, and I estimated that I was forty pounds over normal.  My tennis game was suffering, even though I played at least three times a week---doubles only.  At the tennis center, I was having strength and stamina problems when I was playing, due to lack of conditioning, muscle strength, and being overweight.

About a year ago, weighing the most I’d ever weighed in my life, I decided to look into the Vetta Fitness Center. I was skeptical, because I’d always had a phobia about fitness equipment and had panic attacks just thinking about working out. I was afraid of further injuring my back, my other knee (which will need a replacement someday), and the area of my back that had surgery to replace ruptured discs. I got clearance from my orthopedic surgeon and pain management doctor, with a formula of what to avoid while exercising. Armed with that information and permission, I walked in last fall and signed up for the membership--fitness, tennis, and pool.

I have experienced a complete turn-around in my life since I joined the fitness club and began training with a Vetta Sports Personal Trainer. I have been training with them once a week for over a year now, with amazing results. Along with watching my diet, I’ve lost thirty pounds and with Vetta’s help, I’ve built up my strength, and I can now do many things that were unthinkable a year ago.  For example, I can carry heavier items like my dog’s food, and I can open jars with my hands. I’m hitting tennis balls a lot harder, something that my tennis friends have actually noticed.

The personal trainers at Vetta are very understanding and design programs each session with variety and care. They know when I’ve had enough! They can tell when I need to change repetitions or weights.

The fitness center is fully equipped with all the machines and weights essential for any individual’s training program, and the trainers design programs suited for each person’s needs. If I go in on my own, I know I can go to my file, find my chart, and use my trainer’s notations to work out for an hour with the correct repetitions and weights. Everyone at the center is concerned, kind, and helpful.  There isn’t the crowd you’d find at one of the national chains, and it’s so much more personal at Vetta.  When I arrive, I know I won’t be pushed beyond my limits and my program will be designed to fit my particular needs.  I highly recommend Vetta’s Fitness Center and its trainers, and I believe anyone will find their rates competitive as well.

I had been training on my own for a while, but I was not seeing the results I wanted. A friend suggested I try a few sessions with one of the personal trainers at Vetta Sports, so I did. That was a year ago and I am extremely happy that I made the commitment. There is a huge difference between working out alone and working out with a trainer. Here is what I have noticed:

·         The personal trainers know the limits of my body.  I am a lot safer working out with them.

·         There has been a marked increase in my strength since I began working with the personal trainers. I found I was not doing as much as I was capable of. They know how hard to push me, but they do not take me beyond my limits.

·         There is more accountability. I usually have two appointments a week and I work hard to stick to them. When I was working out on my own, I would blow off my workouts whenever I didn’t feel like doing it. Sometimes I would show up to work out on my own, but cut it short or take it extremely easy. The trainers understand the challenges of a hectic schedule and how easy it is for a person to lose sight of their goals.  They do not let me get away with any of that stuff.  The trainers are supportive and help me follow through on my commitment to myself.

·         It is more fun working out with someone than to work out alone.

·         There is variety in the workout routine. When I get used to doing one movement, the trainers will spring something new on me. I know I will never get bored this way.

For anyone wondering whether they should train with the personal trainers at Vetta Sports, my recommendation is JUST TRY IT!  Do it for four sessions and you’ll probably be hooked.

I have been a member of Vetta Fitness for about four years.  For the first three years I did what most people do when they join a fitness center; I would jump on a cardio machine for about 30 minutes and then use the free weights or machines.  I did not realize it at the time, but this was not the best or quickest way to get fit.  Frankly, I was just going through the motions.

In November of 2009, Vetta added Body Pump to its group fitness class schedule.   I had never been an advocate of group fitness but one of my friends urged me to try the class.  It kicked my tail.  I thought that I was in good shape but I could not make it through the routine.  This became a challenge to me and I decided to give it three months.  During this time, I discovered that I enjoyed working out with others (the group aspect) and the benefit of doing so.  I also started to learn the benefits of the Body Pump methodology.  By April of 2010, I had my proof; I was getting muscle definition and had lost 15 pounds.

In March of 2010, Vetta introduced their Strength & Conditioning classes.  These workouts will take your fitness to a whole new level.  They push you hard until you think that you cannot make it but feel so proud when you do.

Today, I am down 25 pounds from November of 2009.  I feel and look better than I have in years.  I would encourage anyone to commit to one of Vetta’s programs for six months.  I think that they would be very happy with the results.

I have been a member of Vetta Fitness for about four years.  I have stuck with Vetta because it has a family atmosphere.  It is a place where you get to know the staff and members and feel like you belong. This carries through to my business and personal life.

If I can do it then anyone can.  I would urge any member to get involved in one of the programs and stick with it for at least three months.  They will find out how effective these workouts are.  The best part is that they only take one hour.
